3rd graders have been studying African American Artists for Black History month. We decided to make story quilts a la Faith Ringgold. I know this lesson can be overdone in the art world, but I think she is fabulous and the kids can relate to her art because her artwork is primarily based on stories she heard as a child. Also, her images are playful, colorful, and enticing. Here is a You Tube video that I played for the young artists:
